I have recently bought myself a more 'practical' car, a Mk1b MR2. (OK I know its only got 2 seats, and practically no boot, but thats besides the point! It has a roof, heater and stereo!)
The car is a 1987 E reg. Its the cross over model, so it has all the benefits of the Mk1b and the better engine (IMO) from the Mk1a (the a engine has a lighter bottom end so it revs more freely, all the way to 8000rpm!). Its done 104,000 miles (not a lot for a 21 year old car!) and its had an awful lot of money spent on it in the past 5 years, including:
- New toyota front wings (inner and outer)
- New rear wings (inner and outer)
- New t-bar seals
- Rear bumper replacement as the paint was cracking
- Full body re-spray
- New starter motor
- Full suspension rebuild front and rear
- New brake system, front and rear
A brief spec:
Engine: 4A-GE 1600, twin cam, fuel injection, TVIS, 124bhp, totally standard other than a stainless steel exhaust system and manual choke fitted
Exterior: Super White, 15" wheels (195/50R15), T-top
Interior: Black leather seats (need some work), Kenwood stereo
Performance: 0-60 7.8 seconds, 125mph top speed
Jobs to do:
I have several little jobs to do on the car in the next few weeks, along with several jobs to do on the GTS!
- Fit the new stereo - to replace the current Sony tape player! DONE
- Flush out the coolant system - this could do with a proper flushing out I think and refilling. The heater and rad will be flushed along with the oil cooler and engine block.
- Re-fit the top windscreen trim - this looks like it might be a pain to do, but I'll give it a go! DONE
- Change the brake and clutch fluid - I think this was done a few years ago, but I would rather do it, then I know its good.
- Fit new windscreen wiper blades - the old ones are a bit juddery. DONE
- Have a good look underneath - apparently the car has been undersealed, but I want to have a look and see what it's like under there! DONE
- Fit the original air filter back on - and sell the K&N (I dont see what advantages the K&N gives in the confines of the hot engine bay to be honest) DONE
- Spray the rear quarter light trim sections - the paints worn through after years of polishing! (Theres a few other bits of trim that could do with a quick coat of paint too.
- Get the leather seats refurbished - the drivers side needs some stitching which I will let the professionals do! Otherwise they need re-dying and a good leather feed!
- Clean the wheels properly - they need a good wash and polish DONE
- Clay bar and Meguiars 3 step the whole car! DONE
- Clean the engine bay up - this needs a good weekend and several tins of Gunk I think!
- Change the spark plugs - DONE
- Get the chip in the windscreen repaired DONE
- Coolant system bled - this cured the cold idle issue - DONE
- Fit new rear speakers DONE
