And Now the Important Bit...
I was planning to build quite close to the book, but thatís all gone out the window due to the fact that there are hardly any Mk2 Escorts left! For me thereís only one choice for the donor (see The Donors), the donor is DEFINATELY going to be a 2 litre pinto engined Sierra, though I will not be using IRS. I don't feel that a Locost would benefit from the independent rear set up. As the suspension travel is at max about 2-3", how much benefit will be gained by IRS? Little I doubt. The standard Sierra diff is interchangeable with the LSD unit from the XR4x4, the LSD would give much better straight line acceleration and grip. For this reason I have decided to go for a de-dion axle at the back of the chassis. This takes all of the running gear from the Sierra, but needs little modification to the chassis.
This however means that the track of my car will be about 4" wider than an Escort based Locost. The front wishbones will also have to be widened to keep everything in proportion. But this is not much hassle compared to building an IRS system! Or the wishbones can be left standard length, leaving a wider track at the rear. There is no detrimental effect to the handling by doing this.
The Build Diary
I'm sure you know how these work by now. As I progress slowly through my Locost build I will update this page when possible. Just click on one of the links below to see what has happened so far.
Some of the build pages contain lots of photos, so please be patient for them to load. Enjoy!
